History of Pura Taman Ayun

Built in 1634 by King I Gusti Agung Putu, the ruler of the Mengwi Kingdom, Pura Taman Ayun was a major temple for the royal family, or pura kawiten, dedicated to the worship of deified ancestors and the gods of Hinduism. The name "Taman Ayun" can indeed be translated to "Beautiful Garden", appropriately named considering that the temple grounds are filled with wide gardens, lotus-filled ponds, and surrounding moats, which signify the Balinese cosmos of human-nature harmony.
