KAWI Ubud: A Sip of Indonesia

In an island increasingly defined by spectacle and polished hospitality, KAWI Ubud has spent three years perfecting the art of simplicity.

This isn’t a bar chasing trends or curating Instagram moments. It’s a 15-seat sanctuary that celebrates Indonesian ingredients and mindful craftsmanship, where every drink tells a story steeped in the soul of the archipelago. And we experienced firsthand just how KAWI Ubud transforms Indonesia’s local ingredients into refined, story-driven cocktails that honor heritage while embracing creativity.

The Space

"KAWI has been called a bartender's bar, a bar by introverts for introverts, and a bar for creatives," says Christian Tseng, one of KAWI's co-founders. "I think it's all of the above—KAWI is a bar for anyone looking for a safe space, a place to call their own and to express their own individuality among other like-minded ones."

It's a real squint and you'll miss it moment. Tucked in the side of Jl. Raya Lungsiakan, no flashy signs, just a leafy exterior that invites you into one of the best cocktail bars in Ubud, according to Tatler Indonesia.

The moment you step into this evening-only cocktail bar, you’re immediately wrapped in its moody embrace — soft lights of a minimalist interior, low murmurs of conversation, and the rhythmic clink of shakers crafting liquid art at the heart of it all. This slow bar draws you in, sparking quiet curiosity about what intriguing concoction will slide your way next.

We were immediately welcomed by the maestros of the night,  Gunarsa Wayan and Budi Ari Yasa, ready to take us to a journey through flavors.

The Cocktails

We had the privilege of tasting four of their best-selling cocktails: Nangka, Salak, Kecombrang, and Kakao. Each cocktail is distinctly crafted with local Balinese arak. Named after traditional herbs found in traditional Indonesian delicacies, these cocktails capture the essence of the island in every sip!

Each cocktail is thoughtfully and clearly explained by the bartenders allowing guests to appreciate the story and inspiration behind every creation, how they were sourced, and why they pair perfectly with certain sides.

Our highlight of the night is definitely the Kakao, our first time indulging in a warm cocktail. Very reminiscent of a Christmas hot cocoa, but slightly spiked with Salak Arak (snakefruit spirit) and spiced with cloves and cinnamon for a tropical season's greetings. The taste of the jasmine cream on top left a distinct flavor long after we've returned into the bustling roads outside of Ubud.

The Verdict

When conversation matters more than volume. When you're willing to wait for a seat because what waits inside is worth it. When you understand that sometimes the best experiences require nothing more than excellent craft, thoughtful intention, and space to simply exist, KAWI Ubud awaits.

The space provides sanctuary from Ubud's increasing tourist intensity. The team demonstrates genuine hospitality without performance. Everything aligns with stated philosophy—nothing feels extraneous or calculated for effect.

Book nothing. Reservations don't exist here. Just show up, ideally early, definitely curious, and prepare to experience Indonesian flavors in ways you never imagined possible.
