A Journey Into Ubud's Soul: Our Immersive Experience at Alila Ubud

When you hear Alila Ubud, the first thing that often comes to mind is another resort in the middle of the forest. But in reality, it’s on a completely different level.

A beautiful stay, certainly. Excellent service, no doubt. However, the experience turned out to be far more than just a typical luxury escape. This wasn't just a resort visit. It became a genuine immersion into the heart of Ubud's forest and culture.

Our Stay

Right from the beginning, the team there had this way of making us feel at home without being over-the-top. They were always there when we needed something, yet they gave us plenty of space to just breathe. As we walked through the grounds, the city noise we brought with us just seemed to fade away, replaced by the heavy sound of the jungle. It was exactly the kind of slow, quiet start we were looking for.

But it was the setting that truly took our breath away. Tranquility wrapped around us like a physical thing. The intimate scale of the property, the way it seemed to grow organically from the hillside. An ambiance that simply cannot be replicated.

alila ubud afternoon tea

Our first adventure started with a simple afternoon tea.

Except there was nothing simple about sipping tea while perched on what felt like the edge of paradise itself! Before us, the Ayung River Valley stretched away in a dizzying drop, roughly 100 meters of sheer, forested cliff face.

The air felt different up here. Cooler, cleaner, carrying the earthy scent of the surrounding jungle. We found ourselves just sitting, breathing, existing in that moment.

Even the iconic clifftop pool seems to dissolve into the valley below, creating this impossible visual where water, sky, and forest blur together. It's the kind of view that makes you forget your tea is getting cold.

This is what Alila Ubud does best: it places you squarely in nature's cathedral while surrounding you with thoughtful luxury. The forest cliff and infinity pool aren't just beautiful backdrops. They become part of your experience, shifting how you see and feel everything around you.

Morning came with an unexpected visitor. Actually, several of them.

We stepped onto our terrace to find a small gathering of monkeys who had clearly decided to offer their welcome, too!

Now, if you're the type who prefers wildlife safely behind glass or at a comfortable distance, this might sound alarming. But here's why we love it: this moment perfectly captures what makes staying at Alila Ubud so special.

These are wild residents of Ubud's jungle, going about their daily routines, which occasionally intersected with ours. The staff later explained that such encounters are simply part of life here. The property hasn't cleared away nature to create some artificial luxury bubble. Instead, it asks guests to become temporary members of this ecosystem.

We found the experience delightful, if slightly chaotic. It's these unscripted moments that stay with you. They remind you that real luxury isn't about controlling every variable. Sometimes it's about embracing the wonderful unpredictability of the natural world.

The Alila Journey

This is why your next visit to Alila Ubud will be a stay you will not forget: the Alila journey, a curated guest experience designed to take you into the soul of Ubud, from its timeless rituals to its hidden natural wonders.

We decided to take part in the Melukat (Blessing) experience. We were taken to a local griya (a sacred ground) to meet with the local priest. There weren't many visitors when we visited so we could focus on the whole process without rushing.

The experience felt intimate, respectful, and humbling. An opportunity to witness Balinese spirituality as it is genuinely lived, not staged for visitors.

The next journey is Pura Gunung Kawi, an incredible 9th-century site tucked away in the Tampaksiring valley. Even with its massive historical significance, the place was surprisingly quiet, holding onto this still, contemplative energy that you don't always find at the more famous landmarks.

We didn’t perform Melukat here. Instead, we focused on observing how the temple is still actively used by the local community for daily prayers and offerings. Everyone performing rituals that day were local Balinese, reinforcing the authenticity of the place and how deeply it remains rooted in community life.

alila ubud bbq buffet

The day ended with a journey back to the resort, where we unwound with a decadent BBQ Buffet spread featuring a generous all-you-can-eat spread: lobster, chicken, and fish to tender pork ribs, all grilled to perfection! An à la carte salad on the side added a refreshing balance to the meal as we basked in the live acoustic performance and soothing saxophone music that set a warm, premium tone for the night.

Our last day was all about taking in the luxurious ambiance of Alila Ubud. Breakfast was calm and unhurried, served with lush forest views and birdsong.

Finishing our time here on such a calm note was exactly what we needed before heading back home. The experience didn't feel like a typical hotel stay; it was more like a much-needed reset. We left the resort feeling completely refreshed and a lot more centered than when we first arrived.

What makes Alila Ubud along with their sister property, Alila Manggis, so different is that they don't try to hide the 'real' Bali behind a luxury curtain. Whether you're deep in the Ubud valley or breathing in the salt air of East Bali, you’re invited to actually connect with the land and the people. You don't just visit these places; you leave feeling like you've finally found a bit of balance again.
